Do seedlings of larger geophytic species outperform smaller ones when challenged by drought?

چکیده

Premise In semiarid regions, decreasing rainfall presents a challenge to perennial seedlings that must reach sufficient size survive the first year’s seasonal drought. Attaining large storage organ has been hypothesized enhance drought resilience in geophytes, but building larger organs requires faster growth, paradoxically, some traits confer growth are highly sensitive We examined whether tuber confers greater of four closely related geophytic species Pelargonium. Methods imposed two treatments when were 2 months old: chronic low water and acute restriction for 10 days. Plants dry-down treatment then rewatered at control levels. compared morphological ecophysiological 2, 3, 6 age used mixed-effects models identify determining biomass dormancy. Results Despite 10-fold variation size, had similar physiological trait values under well-watered conditions. Chronic droughts negatively affected end season, only with tubers. did not affect any species, response drought, showed reduced photosynthetic performance. Canopy area was best predictor final biomass. Conclusions Contradictory hypothesis tubers provide resiliency, small Pelargonium actually higher tolerance, although expense more vigorous

Reactive Learning: Actively Trading Off Larger Noisier Training Sets Against Smaller Cleaner Ones

One of the most popular uses of crowdsourcing is to provide training data for supervised machine learning algorithms. Because of imperfect workers, requesters commonly ask multiple workers to redundantly label each example. When the goal is to train the best classifier at the lowest cost, active learning can intelligently pick new examples to label. However, active learning fails to address a f...

Hormones and honest signals: males with larger ornaments elevate testosterone more when challenged.

When male investment in mating varies with quality, reliable sexual signals may evolve. In many songbirds, testosterone mediates mating investment, suggesting that signals should be linked to testosterone production. However, because testosterone may change rapidly during behaviour such as territorial aggression and courtship, efforts to establish such a relationship have proved challenging. In...
